Lachie Denise Thompson; photographer, courier, curator of the upcoming courier zine, and has eyes the colour of blue ice. Melbourne born; he has a knack for giving people the finger and taking really really good photos:

Why did you move to Sydney?
I heard the weather was nice up here and always wanted to live up here so at the end of last year moved up with my girlfriend at the time. We broke up and SYDBMA became my new girlfriend and now im stuck.

Can you tell me why you take pictures?
I started taking photos last year mainly because I felt like I was forgetting all this cool shit I was doing. And iPhone photos don’t really have the same vibe to them, imagine being 90 years old or whatever and scrolling though your iphone photos with your grandkids, stuff that.. they can find me on tumblr!

My mate Pip hooked me up with an old Mju II and they seemed to turn out pretty good. It’s a fun thing to do. Especially if you take a camera to a party and wake up with no film left and you get real nervous / excited to get it developed and see all the out of focus shit you got up to.

Your photo’s look like there is something wild and energetic happening.

Just good timing I guess. Crazy situations definitely make for interesting photos though. The moments I’ve missed cause ive been too lazy to pull the camera out or ran out of film or whatever, all gone, bugger.

Do you ever manipulate the environment before taking your photographs, or are they all ‘capturing the moment style’?
Yeah I suppose, ive definitely said ‘do this itll make a good photo’ and it made a good photo. I tell people to say cheese a lot as well.

What kind of equipment do you use?
All film cameras. I have a couple of el cheapo point and shoots which go alright.
My mum was a photographer so I’ve been lucky enough to have a go with her old equipment. Im trying to use an old Olympus OM-4ti which is a pretty cool camera. Definitely always checking ebay for new stuff to play with but so is every other dork unfortunately.

Favorite things to photograph?
Friends hanging out in nice spots, and bikes, and rad looking cars. Basically I’m just trying to construct a timeline for myself that I can look back on and go ‘oh shit that’s right!’ and if other people like looking at it then I’m stoked on that as well.

What do you think makes a good photograph?
How long is a piece of string? In focus is always a good start, I am still struggling with this. Apparently there’s some rule of threes or some shit which is the key to good photos.

What other hobbies do you have?
Bikes I guess. And going to the pub. Fishings good. Eating junk food, mainly pizza and Frangos. Hobby is a pretty weird way of putting these things that I like doing though now I think about it.

Do you consider yourself a creative person?
Yeah sure in some ways. I feel like I draw on other peoples creativity more-so though. I get psyched when other people are doing rad stuff and then sorta get in the zone myself.

I am finding it really hard to ask this question, the way it sounds is kind of like – how has being a courier shaped your creative spirit? But it sounds too lame. But I suppose for me, I get a lot of energy seeing the way everyone interacts, how the city beats, and how I feel each day, I can’t help but write about it, draw it, or make something arty about it. So what about for you?
I definitely spend a lot of my time at the moment doing bike messenger related stuff, so in that way it has quite sharply shaped what I do creatively. Im doing and see a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t do if I didn’t have this job. Definitely being in Sydney has only emphasized this because I seem to only hang out with messengers cause I don’t really have family or old mates here. Not complaining though.

What is your favorite part of the day?
Knock off beer. I do enjoy getting slammed at work every now and again, conditions have to be right though.

What is your favorite part of the week?
Sunday morning. I despise Tuesdays. I haven’t worked full time this consistently in a long time and it definitely takes it out of me by the end of the week.

What is your favorite part of the year?
ACMC, CMWC, Birthday time, and Chrissy, probably in that order.
